An article on the flaws of our military planning. Good read.

I want the troops home as much as everyone else. We are not the world police. However we are in a catch 22 where if we do bring home our troops, they will be jobless. It is not black and white. It is a very dingy and ugly shade of grey.

Here is a couple quotes:

“In the last 60 days, as many as 8,900 Army National Guard soldiers were either sent home early from Iraq or Afghanistan, or were told that the Pentagon’s plans to send them to war had either been shelved or changed. As a result, U.S. military and Guard leaders have been scrambling to find alternative missions for many of the soldiers…”

“In the coming weeks, as America works to extricate itself from two wars, the U.S. will pull the remaining 18,000 troops out of Iraq, and withdraw 10,000 forces from Afghanistan. Another 23,000 or more will come out of Afghanistan by next fall.”

Climate Change Is Robbing the Northeast of Reds
The iconic fiery fall foliage of the Yankee forest is showing up later as falls get warmer and winters milder.
Though there hasn’t been a comprehensive study of U.S. forests, the AP noted three studies which suggest New England’s autumn colors are falling victim to climate change:
Massachusetts – leaves change three days later than they did 20 years ago in Harvard Forest, according to a retired Harvard professor’s data
New Hampshire – Sugar maples are going dormant five days later than they did two decades ago, says data from the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest
Vermont – Sugar maple growing season ended later than the statistical average seven years out of the last ten in the Proctor Maple Research Center
Though many trees now change into their autumn wardrobes later, the red maple may loose its brilliant blush altogether.

Do you spend your nights wondering where do mermaids come from?
(Maybe you do, maybe you don’t — but we’re going to tell you anyway.)
The first recorded mermaid was the powerful 10th-century B.C. Assyrian goddess Atargatis, who was a beautiful woman from the waist up and a fish from the waist down.
What about vampires, Dracula, zombies…? We’ve covered it all here.

For such a smart species we are incredibly cruel. Maybe we traded our soul for some for our brains. I want a trade back!

Since 2009, photographer Chris Jordan has been documenting birds on Midway Atoll way out in the Pacific Ocean — near what’s known as the “Pacific Garbage Patch” or, essentially, a swirling heap of plastic the size of Texas.
What Jordan found on those islands were carcasses of baby birds that have died an unnerving death: According to the BBC, “about one-third of all albatross chicks die on Midway, many as the result of being mistakenly fed plastic by their parents.”

Saint Beluga - Submerged in the clear, cold waters of his tank at the giant aquarium in Vancouver, Canada, this beluga designs watery halos by exhaling bubbles of air. This mammal, which lives in artic and sub artic waters, can reach a length of almost 20 ft (6 m) and weigh a ton and a half. The beluga population is estimated to be made up of only about 100,000 animals.

Climbing Without Ropes

For some climbers, protection takes away the essence of the sport. Without ropes and other obstacles, proponents of free soloing say their sport offers a kind of focus, simplicity and shttp://www.tumblr.com/new/photopeed that other forms of climbing can’t touch.
Free soloing also offers the possibility of death at any moment. If a rock ledge breaks, or sweaty fingers slip at hundreds or thousands of feet up, chances are not good for survival.

Amazing video here. The second one is heart-stopping.
